February is a big month in Rocky Point for festivals and events and the Taste of Peñasco Culinary & Cultural Festival is another one of our favorites events. Offering food, fun, and an authentic peek into the beauty of our country, our FMI Rentals guests find this event one filled with taste and joy, and we highly recommend it to everyone who visits. This guide to the Taste of Peñasco, as it is also known, will make you wish February would hurry up and arrive so that you could get started on your south of the border tasteful and comfortable adventures!
Delicioso Is the Word
Even those without an aptitude for languages will understand what delicioso means, especially after your first tastes of the foods on display at the Taste of Peñasco Culinary & Cultural Festival. Offering meals prepared by the best chefs in town and country, this authentic taste of Mexico is an event we look forward to 364 days of the year. On the 365th day, we wear our most stretchy pants and dine our way from booth to booth, being careful not to miss a single bite. The competition between local chefs promises to be a fiery one, and their creations are destined to be the best thing you have tasted this year, and because the only limit to what you can sample is your budget, so be sure to buy as many tasting tickets as you can and if you think you bought enough, go ahead and buy five more just to be safe! The competition is fierce in Rocky Point as our restaurant chefs compete for title of best chef in town, and winners will be chosen by the people who sample the foods and a panel of five judges.
Fire in the Mouth
Perhaps our favorite part of the event is the Salsa Competition, and no, we aren’t talking about the dance. We are discussing the sauce we can’t live without, made with tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers of escalating degrees of hotness, and of course, lots of the magical herb known as cilantro! As you sample and make your votes, we can promise that if you were never that big a fan of salsa before, it is because you have never had it like this before, and if you play your cards right, you may be able to wrangle the recipe out of the winning contestant—after the contest has ended, of course! If not, go ahead and buy a few jars to hold you over, and be sure to come back next year to restock your supply of salsa.
Raffles Add to the Fun
No one wants to leave a fun time emptyhanded, and if your raffle ticket wins, you won’t have to! Offering fantastic prizes that include hotel & B&B stays, beautiful art, and many more wonderful fun things to do in Puerto Penasco, the proceeds of the raffle will go to local charities, allowing visitors to have fun, win big, AND do a good deed at the same time.

If the food and drinks were all this event focused on, we really think you could consider it one of your favorites, but there is so much more to explore it might just blow your mind. The Mermaid Market is known for its offering of art pieces, hand-crafted crafts, and its large selection of wares that can only be found south of the border, and its booths will be open for business during the festival. Pace yourself on the food, sampling a little of this, a little of that, and in between bites you can explore all the talented creations that we can assure you, will make the best souvenirs. Pottery, jewelry, fabric, even piñatas may be available for purchase and another thing we can assure you of is that you will be glad you packed light, because your bags are going to be filled with all kinds of goodies when you have to return home at the end of your stay!
