This guide to one of our favorite festivals, and to all the wonders found in our beachy sanctuaries, will give you a little something extra to look forward to in the days and weeks that lead up to your Mexican getaway.
What Makes This Festival Special
Have you noticed that parades seem to be happening on fewer and fewer occasions in our hometowns? Small towns, of course, are holding tightly onto the traditions, but the bigger cities just can’t be bothered, and except for those on television, it is quite possible your kiddos have never been to a parade. Viva Peñasco Fiesta & Cultura, however, brings the parade to town on the first of the three days, offering colorful floats, talented marching bands, and in some year acrobatic delights performed by the areas best acrobats or gymnasts. The parade will take place not just on the first or last day of the Rocky Point event, but every day opens with the procession, awakening a new love for parades in all who stand on the sidelines.
Multiple Stages and a Variety of Entertainment
What’s a fiesta without music? Kind of boring if you ask us, but it is nothing you will have to worry about with this party, as there will be a constantly revolving list of musicians playing their hearts out on multiple streets throughout town. Singing along to the songs you know and dancing to the beat of the songs you are just learning is highly recommended, but we suggest you not stay in one place too long as the stages found throughout town will offer a variety of entertainment options, not just the music that is speaking to your heart. Street theater groups will be performing skits sure to make you smile and laugh out loud while local talent will show off their skills in a variety of areas, and because every year is different, we don’t have a list of what to expect, but we figure the surprise of finding out for yourself is worth the ticket of admission. (Which is absolutely free, by the way!)
Art and the Artists Who Create
The most beautiful places in the world attract the most talented artists in the world and Rocky Point is no exception, so of course, their talented work will be displayed at various booths around town, so even though this is a free event visitors are encouraged to bring their wallets and explore all that is for sale. Jewelry, pottery, clothing, and of course paintings and drawings are just some of the things you may encounter during your perusal of the fiesta’s art booths.
Carnival Rides for the Kids
Even as adults, we never forget the excitement that can be had on carnival rides and the ones that line the streets during this fiesta will bring a new generation of fun seekers, including your own children. The simple pleasures of swings, the dizzying fun of tilt a whirls, maybe even a pint sized roller coaster or two are often amongst the rides that make an appearance and as you see the joy on your precious children’s faces, you will know that visiting Rocky Point during the fiesta was the best decision you could have made this year!
Food and Drink
Tacos are rapidly becoming the world’s favorite hand held treat but if you think you have tried them all, we are here to tell you that you haven’t had an authentic taco until you make your way past the border and towards the streets of Rocky Point during this wonderful festival. Fiery, spicy, and mouthwateringly delicious, tacos are just the start of the foods you can devour during the festival, and we suspect there will be some tequila stands, margarita bars, or beer carts on hand to help visitors wash down all that deliciousness!
