Rocky Point is a popular vacation destination for many reasons. Warm sunshine practically all year round, miles and miles of beautiful beaches, incredible fishing opportunities, and a unique culture all make this tourist town a favorite among those wanting to get away from it all for a while. Rocky Point itself has a plethora of activities and attractions for all tastes, but the surrounding areas offer a lot as well. If you’re looking for attractions just outside of Rocky Point, consider the following:
CET-MAR Aquarium
Located at 43 Las Conchas Road in Las Conchas just outside of Rocky Point, this aquarium offers an opportunity to observe and enjoy some of the area’s unique species that live and thrive near the gulf coast community. The Center for Technological Sea Studies and Aqua Culture (CET-MAR) is a place where you can see shrimp, various fish species, sea lions, sea turtles, octopus, and more. This affordable aquarium only costs $3 per adult and $2 per child and is open all week, Monday-Friday from 10 AM- 3PM and Saturday & Sunday from 10 AM-6 PM.
Tide Pools
Kids will love the many tide pools that allow them to learn about many creatures of the ocean while they’re in their natural habitat. Some of the best tide pool spots are at the CEDO in Las Conchas while others are located right in front of the Granada Del Mar Hotel and in front of Manny’s Beach Club. A great place to go as a family, adults will also enjoy the tide pools and the serene views. Hermosa Beach is also a great spot for exploring the tide pools. Find colorful sea plants, coral, crabs, squid, shrimp, little fish and more.
CEDO Tours
Las Conchas has a one-of-a-kind natural history museum complete with a field station for classes and researches, a full education center and library with laboratories and a book store, a huge fin whale skeleton, and free public tours available on Tuesdays at 2 PM and on Saturdays at 4 PM.
Volcanic Formations of the Pinacate
Located in the El Pinacate and Great Altar Desert Biosphere Reserve, this area has over 400 volcanic structures including large craters, and various crater rings. Some of the formations are within a short and fairly easy hike while others will require the athleticism of more experienced hikers to reach and will require some preparation for the journey in order to reach them.
