Puerto Penasco, Mexico, or “Rocky Point” as it is often referred, is a popular fishing destination both for seasoned fisherman and those who have never fished before. Tourists who visit Puerto Penasco, particularly during the warmer months, can enjoy catching a variety of whitefish, halibut, red snapper, black sea bass, trigger fish and gold-spotted bass from the bright blue waters of the Sea of Cortez while making memories to enjoy for years to come.
Though the winter months can be challenging for anyone hoping to fish because of unappealing water temperatures in the 50’s which isn’t particularly welcoming for fish, the spring and summer months bring in thousands of fish waiting to be caught. Fishing can be done from the shore of the beach or off the side of small cliffs and rocks. Some of the best spots for fishing right off of the shore are located in nearby estuaries or ports. Visitors are encouraged to be cautious of the tide season when they visit as some tides can be quite strong right off of the shore and many can be overwhelming, so be sure to ask about the local tide season before visiting.
The “Old Port” in Penasco provides plenty of fishing spots and the local fisherman often gather in this area after their daily trips to sell their catch of the day to tourists or hungry locals. For those who aren’t even interested in fishing themselves, visiting this port is an experience just to enjoy the waterfront scenery and watch the local fisherman bring in their fish.
During the late summer months visitors are welcome to rent charter boats to take them further into the Sea of Cortez in search of a bigger catch such as marlin and dorado. A charter boat adventure can be rented solo or as a group which makes it great for family experiences while learning more about the sea and the creatures that swim within its waters.
The charter boats come equipped with everything necessary to enjoy an afternoon at sea including bait, tackle, permits, rods, reels, insurance and an experienced boat captain. Other catches that are common going further out to sea on the charter boats include pinto sass, sardineros, rock bass, cochis and more.
Anyone planning on experiencing a charter boat adventure should be aware that these trips often take several hours so bring plenty of water and sunscreen and be prepared to enjoy a day at sea.
