Preparing for Travel to Mexico with Your Pup
Regulations change on a regular basis, and even die-hard rules may or may not be enforced, so just to be safe, when crossing the border, please be sure to have a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination on hand. At this time border guards aren’t really asking for them, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Dog food is another issue you might want to consider, as different sources tell us different things, but just to be safe, make sure the dog food you bring is in an unopened bag.
Oops, You Forgot Dog Food
One of the worst things about traveling to new places is not knowing where to go in case of an emergency, and somehow in the midst of all the chaos that ensued when packing, you forgot the kibble for your cute Kiki! And with this being a foreign country, you may be concerned about whether her diet will be human food for the duration of her stay, upsetting her sensitive stomach, but we can assure you there will be no issues here.
VIPET, located at Av. Guillermo Prieto 70, is a locally run petfood store offering much of what you would expect at PetSmart or other American stores, and they do sell American brands there. If you are not comfortable with shopping in such an unfamiliar store for your most loving family member, Rocky Point also has a Sam’s Club at Blvd. Benito Juárez García S/N, Lagos y Ríos, offering all the pet stuff your club back home does.
More Than Playing Fetch
Dogs are a part of the Rocky Point community, and as such, places are a little more relaxed about pets. You may find that some of the shops you frequent have shop dogs, so if your poor baby is a bit dog reactive, you might want to leave him at home. Also, if you are visiting during the summer months, remember that our streets will get very hot and your pup may feel more comfortable staying behind in the air conditioning.
You will have plenty of time to play together, however, as the beaches of Rocky Point are pet-friendly; just keep your pooch leashed and bring your proof of vaccine and health records with you, just in case anyone asks. Not every dog will appreciate the joy of an ocean frolic, but if yours is one that does, bring your longest leash. Don’t forget a camera, as the memories you make watching your fur baby splash in the surf deserve to be memorialized! This vacation may also be the perfect time to get a beach family pic with your dog and kids. The secret magic of Mexico means it is nearly impossible to take a bad beach pic!
Time to Dine
As we said earlier, we are a little more laid back about dogs on this side of the border, and although we hold pretty firm to the no dogs inside restaurants rule, there are many restaurants with patios on which your sweetest family member will be welcomed with pets and scritches. Almost every patio is fair game for the doggos, but we’ve listed a few of our favorites below.
El Tapeo Wine Bar
Located within the Playa Bonita resort, we must say that in a margarita world, sometimes, it’s better to be a cool glass of wine, and a visit to El Tapeo is definitely one of those times! Offering a menu filled with the most delicious tapas, they are even kind enough to suggest pairings, ensuring that there won’t be a sour note. Although you won’t want to share your good wine with your very good boy, they will bring a bowl of water that we can promise is from a very good year!
JJs Cantina
There are some classic restaurants you want—no, you NEED—to visit during your stay, and JJs is one of those restaurants/night spots that just so happens to welcome your pretty pooch as well. Home to many local special events including art shows, music festivals, and holiday celebrations, your trip to Rocky Point will not be complete if you don’t check out all JJs Cantina has to offer. And although their website doesn’t mention a doggo menu or beverages, we’ve seen so many smiling pups chilling at JJs, we’re sure they will treat your dog right!
Margarita Mermaids
We started these pet-friendly Rocky Point epicurean adventures with wine, so it is only fitting that we end it with margaritas. Margarita Mermaids is one of our favorite hangout spots, offering 20 different margarita flavors (Yes, 20!), stunning views of the Sea of Cortez, and a happy place to sip, savor, and spoil your sweet schnauzer. Visit at sunset and you will never want to go home again!
Spoiling Your Schweenie
We have to say that we are loving the new dog breeds that have entered the American consciousness, and Schweenies may be the cutest one, crossing a dachshund with a Shih Tzu! But we may have gotten a little sidetracked there, we really do want to talk about one of the most fun ways to spoil your traveling pets, and that is with a visit to the Rocky Pet Hotel and Spa. Offering grooming services that will help your bull terrier feel like a whole new pup, after a day of splashing in the surf and rolling in the sand, you too will love how fresh, clean, and sand-free your loyal companion will be. Also offering doggie boarding services, this is a great spot to keep in mind if you feel like taking your Rocky Point journey a little further afoot and aren’t too sure about the reception of River the Rhodesian Ridgeback!

Now that you have an idea of all you can do around Rocky Point with the pup, it’s time to explore the place you will call home during your stay. Not everyone in this world is a pet lover, and other vacation rental companies may either not offer any pet-friendly rentals, or they may simply offer bottom of the barrel properties to those who are traveling with dogs. The first thing you will do upon entering the house will probably be searching for the perfect spot to place little Buster’s water and kibble bowls, and our kitchens will probably be where you land. Offering the room to tuck both bowls out of the way, but still easily apparent to your pet, our fully equipped kitchens will be yet another space your pup will roam underfoot. For the humans, updated appliances, expansive counters, and all the small appliances need to keep you well-hydrated (coffee makers, Keurigs, blenders, even wine refrigerators) may make these rooms the favorite.

The yard is perhaps the most important part of a pet-friendly rental, and ours will be fenced in and also offer more ways to play and relax. Private pools are a favorite of both fur babies and their humans, especially as swim season lasts so much longer in Rocky Point than it does back in your own home town. Also offering barbecues (oh those wonderful smells), patio tables for dining, and the occasional outdoor bar and rooftop patio, these spaces are designed to be fun for all who use them. Some may have mature trees that provide shade, others may feature hammocks and multiple places to sit and relax.
