When most people think of Rocky Point, Mexico, they think of a quiet beach town offering laid-back vibes, great seafood, and wonderful nightlife. But what many people don’t realize is that our little piece of paradise is also known for snorkeling and scuba diving. Today, we are leaving land and taking you on a colorful underwater journey with this complete guide to snorkeling and scuba diving in Rocky Point.
Why the Sea of Cortez Is One of the World’s Best Snorkeling and Diving Destinations
Just because a place has water doesn’t mean it will be a great place for either of these activities. In many parts of the world, the water is dark, murky, and too cold to comfortably swim in, but in the Rocky Point region, warm and clear waters will welcome divers and snorkelers of all skill levels.
Rocky Point, Mexico, snorkeling is especially fantastic due to the extraordinary marine biodiversity found right off the shore. Grab your snorkel, mask, and fins and head out into clear waters for a day of colorful undersea exploration!

The Best Snorkeling Spots Near Rocky Point
We are starting our water adventures by pointing you in the right direction for your Rocky Point, Mexico, snorkeling activities. Although you could just put on your gear and swim out from the beach behind your FMI Rentals beach escape, the spots listed here are the best ones.
Cholla Bay: The Ideal Spot for Beginners and Families
Calm and shallow waters in a protected cove make Cholla Bay the ideal spot for beginning snorkelers or families with smaller children. Still offering fascinating marine life, including starfish, anemones, and colorful fish, it is also easy to access, with the main access points in front of JJ’s Cantina.
The tide pools here are always a hit with curious children, so even if you don’t snorkel, checking out the marine life in the tide pools is still going to be a fun adventure. Wearing fins is recommended; they give you better control and maneuverability, but they aren’t required, and not having to rent them can save you money.
v
Las Conchas: Rocky Reefs and Rich Marine Life
The marine life found in the rocky reefs of Las Conchas is always fun to watch, and because this luxury community is not as crowded as others in the area, the inhabitants won’t be hiding as much as they might in other parts of the Sea of Cortez. Its proximity to the Morua Estuary increases marine biodiversity, and the water is especially clear in this area.
Many of our most popular rentals are located in Las Conchas, enabling guests to step outside, walk a few steps, and then easily begin their snorkeling journey. It is recommended that snorkelers wear water shoes while snorkeling in this area, as there will be exposed rocks and reefs that could damage their feet.
Offshore Reefs and Islands: For the More Adventurous Snorkeler
If drama and adventure are your thing, the offshore reefs and uninhabited islands in the area may be where your favorite snorkeling adventures will occur. Bird Island (real name Isla San Jorge) is located about 20 miles out, and when you sign up for a snorkeling tour (Del Mar Charters is a good one), you may be able to swim near the playful sea lions who live on the island. Pinto Point in Cholla Bay and the Reef/Jetty Outcroppings (near the Reef Club or the Mirador area of Rocky Point) are two more wonderful places for advanced snorkelers.
Scuba Diving in Rocky Point: What You Need to Know
Scuba diving in Rocky Point is a very popular activity, but it isn’t as simple as snorkeling, so there are some things you need to know before you strap on your breathing apparatus. Local dive operators may offer your best chance of having a fun and safe adventure, as well as making it a little easier to do your thing.

You DO need to be certified to scuba dive in Rocky Point, and many operators, including the long-running Rocky Point Scuba Dive company, will provide NAUI and SCUBA certifications; they also offer full-day dive trips, equipment rental, and shore dives. Del Mar Charters and Eco Fun Rentals/Adventures are two other popular and experienced dive operators.
Bird Island and the Pier at the Reef are two top dive sites in the area, with the Pier offering artificial reefs that attract both coral and fish.
Snorkeling and Diving Tips for First Timers in Rocky Point
During your Rocky Point scuba diving and snorkeling adventures, you may be wondering what to bring with you and what you can rent. As mentioned above, local dive operators offer equipment rental. Dive shops, beach shops, and tour operators will also offer snorkel gear, so unless you are partial to your own mask or flippers, you can travel light. Wetsuits will not be necessary in the warmer months, but you may want to consider them in fall and winter, as it can get a bit chilly out in open water.

The Best Time of Year to Snorkel and Dive in Rocky Point
The best time to snorkel and dive in Rocky Point is during the warmer months. June through November offer ideal weather for either activity, with late September through October being prime diving and snorkeling time. This month is considered “paradise season,” as the algae blooms of summer have vanished, improving the visibility in the water. The calmer water also helps make this time of year perfect for beginner snorkelers.
Be Safe and Have Fun
Whether you are snorkeling or scuba diving, you do want to keep a few safety tips in mind. For scuba divers, it is recommended to dive with a local (and reputable) diving company, which will keep you safe and help you find the best spots. More safety tips:
- Watch the tides
- Watch for boats
- Use a surface marker buoy
- Mind the weather forecast
