Living the Good Life
The luxuries continue when you venture off the Rocky Point, Mexico resort. Rocky Point may be known as a casual beach town where Spring Breakers run wild in the spring, but you can find the extraordinary—if you know where to look. Mare Blu on Sandy Beach offers fresh seafood dishes that could grace the menus of any upscale Italian restaurant in the United States. Try the Ravioli alla Polpa di Granchio (homemade ravioli with crab and ricotta cheese) and your life will be changed forever! El Tapeo Wine Bar is an intimate establishment with live entertainment and an excellent selection of wines; even the house red tastes as if it has come from a high-end winery. Oyster lovers will eat their fill and more at the Cholla Bay Oyster House as they wash down farm raised oysters with an ice-cold beer. The view of the bay is included with no additional charge.
From Humble Beginnings
In the beginning, Rocky Point, in spite of its raw and natural beauty, was no more than a bump in the road. Lack of running water made it uninhabitable, but canny bootleggers saw the potential in its proximity to California, Nevada, and Arizona during prohibition and found a way to bring water to the village. Today, Puerto Peñasco has come a long way from its humble beginnings, but it’s only when you visit Malecón (the fish and shrimp market) that you really begin to grasp just how far this quaint fishing village has come!
Many of the stores in and around town still sell handmade trinkets and crafts, created exactly as craftsmen and women from centuries ago would have made them. Vendors still stroll along Sandy Beach selling fresh and delicious mangos, silver and turquoise jewelry, and even whimsically painted wooden animals that would look perfect sitting on your window sill in your office. Both the jewelry and the wooden animals are created by artisans who learned at the knees of their fathers.
